Chapter Twelve

Natasha was sad that she had to leave Natalie alone on Christmas Eve, but this was the cost since she’d wanted to go away with Damon. Okay, she hadn’t wanted to go away at first! Then he had talked her into it. Since Natasha had the money, which Damon had paid her to go away with him, she had been able to buy her sister a few things that Natalie needed and really wanted.

Natalie had told Natasha she would be all right with her going to work because a family she regularly babysat for wanted to go out Christmas Eve. She wouldn’t be home until late in the early morning on Christmas Day. Since their parents had died, Natasha had prevented Natalie from getting a regular tax-paying job. A tax-paying job wouldn’t have given her sister the flexibility to play the sports she loved. Since Tillie wanted to become a professional athlete, preferably in tennis, her babysitting was the only way her sister could make money and play sports at the same time.

Natasha still didn’t want to risk Social Services finding out that she was raising her younger sister, so she also pushed for Natalie not to work a real job when they started to struggle a year back. It was one of Natasha’s biggest fears right after their parents died. She was afraid Social Services would take her sister away from her. Natasha didn’t think she could lose another member of her family. First, they’d lost their parents. Then they’d lost Nathan due to his own stupidity. She just couldn’t lose Natalie.

Natasha didn’t know if her parents had a will. When they had died, the family just cremated them. Natasha paid for it with her saved university funds, which she had been using for her own living expenses while away from home. As she had gotten many bursars and scholarships for her outstanding grades and work on student council, her parents didn’t need to pay for her tuition.

One day, they would return to Australia and scatter their parents’ remains. However, that would have to wait until Nathan got out of prison. He still had over two years left of his sentence to serve.

Coming through the door, tired and with the weight of melancholy on her shoulders, Natalie exhaled a weary breath. It didn’t matter that it was Christmas. To her, it was just another tiring, long, empty day. She struggled to get out of her coat, which was overly worn and in need of upgrading. Natalie was glad her sister was already in bed, unless she’d gone out with her rich, pretty boyfriend again. Something wasn’t right there... Taking off her worn-down boots, Tillie felt like a nice hot bath would warm her weary muscles. She might only get one week’s reprieve from school, but they still had to make money.

She hoped her good angel-esk sister, Natasha, hadn’t decided to turn tricks to pay the bills. For suddenly there was money! And it would seem that Natasha had first thought to buy a new wardrobe when she started dating Damon.
